Although the work of Belgian artist Constant Permeke (1886?1952) is generally classified as Expressionism, he explored a multitude of registers. From the very beginning of his career, Permeke gained widespread international recognition with recurring subjects such as domestic scenes and people engaged in everyday activities. His landscapes and seascapes exude a hushed, sometimes sublime warmth. For Permeke, art and life were closely linked. His oeuvre shimmers with a vital, raw energy but can also be melancholic. He combined his painting technique ? characterised by powerful brushstrokes, dabs, smudges, scratches and streaks ? with drawing and outlining. Fully aligned with Modernism, he looked for ways to break through academism and reinvent painting, time and time again. Constant Permeke?s artistic trajectory was developing very promisingly ? until the war disrupted everything. In July 1914, Belgium announced a general mobilization. Constant Permeke was called up as a soldier and took part in the defense of the Antwerp fortress ring in August. He was severely wounded in the leg by a shell splinter. The war was over for Permeke. Even before the fall of Antwerp on 9 October, all wounded soldiers were transferred from Antwerp to Ostend and then on to England. His heavily pregnant wife and his mother traveled after him. From October 1914 to April 1919, Permeke stayed in England. He moved four times, each time to small, remote villages. This did not stop him from driven experimentation and seeking innovation. He mostly painted in large formats with oil on canvas, applying the paint thickly and roughly with brush and palette knife. The color palette is strikingly intense. Combined with the rough brushwork and unusual framing, it gives the paintings a very distinctive character. In these years of isolation, the seeds were planted for a highly personal artistic path, inspired by modernism and humanism. The exhibition and the book aim to provide an overview of the artistic evolution Permeke underwent during those five crucial years in his young life as an artist. It also presents work by fellow countrymen who likewise stayed in England during the First World War ? such as Edgard Tytgat, George Minne, Léon de Smet, and Gustave Van de Woestijne ? whose works also appear in the exhibition and the book.

Behalve van bekende brieven is daarvoor voor het eerst gebruik gemaakt van een grote correspondentie tussen Permeke en zijn Amsterdamse galerie. Zo krijgen we meer inzicht in de (zaken)man achter de kunstenaar, met een wijdvertakt netwerk, en misschien niet de kunstenaar die in de ogen van velen tot een cliché is geworden, nl. de traditionele Vlaamse 'boerenschilder'. Edoch: als het beste werk van Permeke blijft intrigeren, dan is dat meer dan ooit om artistieke redenen. En daar was hij uitermate slim in. Met VERVE.

Le parcours artistique de Constant Permeke se développait de manière très prometteuse ? jusqu?à ce que la guerre vienne tout bouleverser. En juillet 1914, la Belgique décréta une mobilisation générale. Constant Permeke fut appelé sous les drapeaux et participa à la défense de la ceinture fortifiée d?Anvers en août. Il fut grièvement blessé à la jambe par un éclat d?obus. Pour Permeke, la guerre était terminée. Avant même la chute d?Anvers, le 9 octobre, tous les soldats blessés furent évacués d?Anvers vers Ostende, puis vers l?Angleterre. Sa femme, alors très enceinte, et sa mère le rejoignirent. D?octobre 1914 à avril 1919, Permeke séjourna en Angleterre. Il déménagea quatre fois, chaque fois vers de petits villages isolés. Cela ne l?empêcha pas d?expérimenter avec ardeur et de poursuivre sa quête de renouveau. Il peignait principalement sur de grands formats, à l?huile sur toile, appliquant la peinture de manière épaisse et rugueuse, au pinceau et au couteau. La palette chromatique est particulièrement intense. Combinée à la touche brute et au cadrage inhabituel, elle confère aux tableaux un caractère tout à fait particulier. Pendant ces années d?isolement naquirent les germes d?une trajectoire artistique profondément personnelle, inspirée par le modernisme et l?humanisme. L?exposition et le livre entendent offrir un aperçu de l?évolution artistique parcourue par Permeke durant ces cinq années cruciales de sa jeunesse d?artiste. Ils présentent également des ?uvres de compatriotes ayant eux aussi séjourné en Angleterre pendant la Première Guerre mondiale ? tels qu?Edgard Tytgat, George Minne, Léon De Smet et Gustave Van de Woestijne ? dont des ?uvres figurent également dans l?exposition et le catalogue.
