The Belgian painter Jan Cox (1919-1980) played an important role in the postwar history of art. He was one of teh founders of the group of artists called La Jeune Peinture Belge and he was also closely related to the Cobra movement. In 1956, Cox moved to Boston (USA) where he lived and worked until 1974. Back in Belgium, he was introduced into the art society of 'The Black Panther' Gallery in Antwerp.Jan Cox's first works are mainly abstract, but gradually they got a magical and surrealistic character. The most distinguishing feature however is his choice of mytological and religious themes in combination with the problem of existentialism.

De Belgische kunstschilder Jan Cox (1919-1980) speelde een betekenisvolle rol in de naoorlogse kunstgeschiedenis. Hij was medeoprichter van de kunstenaarsgroep La Jeune Peinture Belge en raakte ook nauw betrokken bij de Cobra-beweging. Van 1956 tot 1974 woonde en werkte Cox in Boston (USA). Bij zijn terugkeer naar Belgie werd hij opgenomen in de kunstenaarskring van Galerie De Zwarte Panter in Antwerpen.Aanvankelijk maakte Cox vooral abstract werk, maar later kregen zijn werken een eerder magisch, surreeel karakter. Hij onderscheidde zich van zijn tijdgenoten door zijn keuze van mythologische en religieuze thema's in combinatie met de existentiele problematiek.
