Hamburg, Johann August Meissner 1843 viii + 339pp., with numerous engravings by Franz Schröder in text (depicting coins), 27x21cm., full leather binding in polished calf, floral filets on both covers, raised decorated spine, marbled endpapers, with an heraldic ex-libris tipped in (baron Surmont), text is clean and bright except for few occasional foxing, [This work is a detailed and systematic study of the "Portugaleser", a large gold coin struck in Hamburg. They were modeled after Portuguse gold coins and were often produced for ceremonial or banking purposes rather than for everyday circulation. Each entry documents inscriptions, imagery, minting authority and historical context. This publication is the first part of a continuation of the publication by Langermann "Hamburgische Münz- und Medaillen-Vergnügens"], a very good copy of this scarce publication, weight: 1.4kg., G121043
