‎From Augustine to Anselm: The Influence of De trinitate on the Monologion,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XVIII+497 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503540863.‎

‎Anselm (1033-1109) described the Monologion, his first major theological work, as a model meditation on the divine essence; and he enjoined his potential critics to read Augustine's De trinitate diligently and then judge the Monologion by it. In following Anselm's admonition, I have paid particular attention to Anselm's claims about the persuasiveness of his arguments, and probed the cogency of some of the many arguments that make up the Monologion. The result is something like a critical companion to the Monologion. It is not meant to replace an actual reading of the Monologion, which is an experience worth having, since no interpretation or paraphrase can capture the feeling of wading through Anselm's analytic arguments. And I have resisted the common tendency of reading the Monologion merely as a prelude to its more evocative sequel, the Proslogion. Because Anselm's arguments attend to fundamental themes in philosophical theology, this book also provides comment on the state of early medieval philosophical theology and Anselm's unique contribution to it. The book has implications not only for our understanding of Anselm's thought and its relation to ancient and early medieval Christian tradition, but also for the ways in which theologians and philosophers since Anselm have appropriated his ideas. Since a good deal of that appropriation often overlooks the Monologion, this study should help towards a re-orientation to Anselm and his relevance to contemporary debates about theological method in general and analytic theology in particular. ‎Anselm and Abelard Investigations and Juxtapositions,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Paperback, VIII+256 p., 15 x 23. ISBN 9780888448194.‎

‎Anselm and Abelard offers a wide-ranging collection of papers on two of the most well-known medieval thinkers, Anselm of Canterbury and Peter Abelard. Drawn from a conference held in Stuttgart in 2004, the sixteen papers by leading scholars in the field focus on the lives and thought of these two thinkers. The majority of the contributions expore the intellectual world of the medieval west in the century between the mid-eleventh and the mid-twelfth, a period crucial in forming intellectual frameworks that would shape subsequent western thought. The first eight papers focus on Anselm, the second eight on comparisons and contrasts with Abelard. All of Anselm's and most of Abelard's major works are examined in the course of the collection. Contributors explore key philosophical themes of thruth, original sin, logic, reason. Others tease out the often intricate networks between intellectual communities in the period to reveal fresh insights into the development of both Anselm and Abelard's thought. This includes consideration of the physical way in which Anselm's corpus was collected and preserved. Connections between literary artifice and theological observation are investigated, as are Anselm's notion of gift and western intellectual attitudes towards Jewish and Islamic thought. Outside the mid-twelfth century the use made of Anselm's thought and historical existence by thirteenth century scholars and by the post-reformation Church in england are also considered. This is an important and thought-provoking collection, which shows the continuing inspiration to be drawn from both Anselm and Abelard as well as providing a thorough investigation of the contexts in which their thought developed, evolved, was expressed ans was understood by contemporaries and subsequent generations. ‎Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109). Philosophical Theology and Ethics, Proceedings of the Third International Conference of Medieval Philosophy, held at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre / Brazil (02-04 September 2009)‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2011 Hardcover. XV 243 p., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: English, French, German, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503542652.‎

‎This volume collects several studies on Anselm of Canterbury?s philosophical theology and ethics originally presented at the Third International Conference of Medieval Philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre / Brazil, 02-04 September 2009. In commemoration of the 900th anniversary of Anselm?s death, the conference facilitated a unique exchange of ideas among Latin American, North American and European scholars on current issues in Anselmian scholarship. The papers included in the volume concern diverse areas of interest: Anselm?s method in different phases of his career and his attitude towards philosophy; Anselm?s contribution to logic and semantics in De grammatico; the continuing challenge of interpreting his ?proof? in Proslogion (revisited with an eye into contemporary accounts of his unum argumentum); the topic of guilt and punishment in Anselm?s works, as well as the understanding of his moral-theological project, in dialogue with contemporary discussions of deontology; the fundamental aspects of his view on human being; the reception of Anselm?s theory of perfections in Duns Scotus?s metaphysics; and the place of Anselm?s thought in Karl Barth?s understanding of theology. These contributions, through their engagement with Anselm?s works, seek to shed light on philosophical and theological issues of perennial interest.‎

‎St Anselm and the Handmaidens of God A Study of Anselm's Correspondence with Women<br>‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2002 Hardcover. XII 336 p., 26 b/w ill., 6 b/w line art, 165 x 245 mm, Languages: English, Latin, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503513379.‎

‎As abbot of Bec and archbishop of Canterbury, the renowned theologian St. Anselm spent most of his career working ?in the world?, primarily with laypersons, not in the cloister. His correspondence contains surprisingly many letters to laywomen, only a few perfunctory letters to nuns and abbesses. Anselm wrote to all estates of noble laywomen: young girls, mothers, mature wives or widows, countesses and queens. Vaughn argues that Anselm collected and edited his own letters, which addressed real women and situations, but also represented particular ideals of women, marriage, parents and children, students and teachers; that the correspondence, an artful construct, was almost an autobiography, teaching by word, deed, and his own example; and a lens through which to discern Anselm?s views of men and women in Anselm?s ideal society. Anselm accords women surprising equality and power, seeing queens as equal to both kings and archbishops, all three primarily as nurturers and teachers, and ideal married couples writ large ? social views modelled on past ideals (primarily St. Gregory), but ironically leaping toward new Twelfth Century attitudes of introspection, self-analysis, individualism, and logic and reason in theology, social issues, politics and law. Mothers and teachers emerge as the ultimate Handmaidens of God.‎
