Bound in later (17th c. ?) full calf, deorated gilt spine, gilt & marbled edges, gilt decoration on both covers, with a central supra libro of an unidentified college ( a large oval - 97 x 72 mm; with a central picture of a hand holding a heart which is pierced by an arrow). The binding show some wear, with some loss of leather at the lower board edges and corners, some damage at top and end of spine due to worming. Technically still a correct binding. On the title-page a small 19th c. oval stamp of the ''Collège Notre Dame de Mongré'' ( Villefranche ). This is the first edition of Seneca's works by Gilles Beys (1540 - 1595). Beys was the son in law of Christophe Plantin. He was sent to Paris by Plantin in 1567 to manage a branch of the famous Antwerp printing house. In 1577 he was replaced by Michel Sonnius and started his own publishing house."
