‎ENGELEN Louis van ( Lier 1857 - Antwerpen 1940 ) :‎
‎Mémoires d'un Rapin.‎

‎ S.l. ( Antwerpen ) , s.d. ( 1932 ) , private edition, ( printed by A. Jacobs, Anvers ) , large in-8°, 27,5 x 18 cm, 198 pp + 39 engravings hors-texte ( pointes sèches, some mounted, most printed on leaves outside the pagination ). Sewn, original printed stiff wrapper. Printed in 50 numbered copies. This is copy n° 38, marked by the author as '' hors commerce ''. With a manuscript ex-dono by the author to ''Monsieur Camille van Peeth ''. Fine copy. Text in French. This is very rare copy of an autobiography of the Belgian painter Louis van Engelen, illustrated by himself with 39 original engravings, signed in the plate LvE. The painter Louis van Engelen ( Lier 1857 - Antwerpen 1940 ) studied under Charles Verlat at the Antwerp Academy. He was a very successful artist, who built himself in 1906 , an impressive town villa in one of the very posh quarters of Antwerp. He was a member of ''Als Ick Kan '' and the group '' Les XIII''. The date of publication of this autobiography is taken from ''Dictionnaire des Peintres, édition Larcier ''. He wrote his autobiography in French. The title in Dutch ( his mother tongue) would have been '' Herinneringen van een een schildersjongen '' or ''Memories of a studio boy ''. The book is very rare. We found only one entry in the OCLC catalogue ( a microform copy in the AMVC - Antwerpen). This book deals mainly with his early youth in a rather anecdotical way. Only at the end he recalls some stories of the first studios he occupied in Antwerp and his travels to Russia with Verlat. The engravings offer , besides their artistic merit, some topographical interest for the town of Lier. This illustrated and early ego-document of a 19th Flemish/Belgian painter is quite unique in art history.‎
