Clichtoveus was born in 1472 in Nieuwpoort , a flemish fisher's port and now a seaside resort. He became professor at the Sorbonne university where he supported at first the reformation ideas of Luther. After the ''Determinatio '' of 1521 in which the university condemned Luther's ideas Clichtoveus became one of his fiercest opponents. He was called Luther's maul ( le maillet de Luther)."
