Dublin, printed for His Majesty's Stationary Office by John Falconer, 1907, xl pp + 594 pp + viii (catalogue of the Commission), index. Contemporary half leather with marbled boards. Binding worn by technically sound, interior good but with some foxing at first leaves. Very interesting catalogue of Grimsthorpe's archive. The main part of the publication - over 400 pp - deals with the activity of Peregrine Bertie also called Lord Willoughby de Eresby ( 1555 - 1601 ). He came to Antwerp in 1582 in the company of the ''Duc d'Anjou'' and later served with the expedition of the Duke of Leicester in the Netherlands . When Leicester left the Netherlands he became commander in chief of the English troops, which he stationed in Geertruidenberg. He was also governor of Bergen op Zoom in 1586. Willoughby's letters and dispatches during this period are neatly summarized and fully indexed. The most important items, such as letters to queen Elisabeth or the States General are reproduced verbatim.
