Of particular note are the naturselbstdruck illustrations; this was a process invented by Alois Auer , director of the K K Hof-und Staatsdruckerei in Vienna. Discovery of natural printing or invention of means to produce in the fastest and simplest way, according to the original itself, printing forms for whole plant collections, for fabrics, lace, embroidery and in general for all kinds of original objects and copies, however thin the reliefs or cavities. This natural printing technique of galvanotype enjoyed a very short period of successrnAlois Auer (11 May 1813 - 10 July 1869) was an Austrian printer, inventor and botanical illustrator, most active in the 1840s and 1850s. He produced a number of works in German and other languages, including the first on the natural printing process. He was the director of the official printing house of the Austrian state (Hof- und Staatsdruckerei), which created illustrated volumes of scientific interest and produced many advances in printing technology. His full name in later life, including the Austrian hereditary knighthood he received in 1860, was Alois Ritter Auer von Welsbach. rn
