The Arkhangelsk City Public Museum was officially established in 1897, when the museum was transformed from a departmental museum under the Statistical Committee into a city public museum. This was initiated by Arkhangelsk Governor Alexander Platonovich Engelhardt, which gave the museum permanent space, additional funding, and the status of a city public museum.
