As a young priest from the upper class of Jerusalem, Joseph Flavius took an active part in the Judean War, including in 67 defending Galilee against the Roman army led by Vespasian. He was captured by the Romans at Iotapata. He later accompanied Vespasians son Titus in the latter stages of the war and thus witnessed the capture of Jerusalem in 70.
