Nathan the Wise, a dramatic poem in five acts by the German playwright Gothold Ephraim Lessing, written and published in 1779. It was not until 1783, after Lessings death, that a premiere took place in Berlin. Later in Weimar, Goethe and Schiller prepared a new production, which made Nathan the Wise an important part of the repertoire of all German theatres.
