At the risk of his life, disguised as a Turkmen, he carried out a reconnaissance of the British fortress of Deidadi in Afghanistan. He made a series of long-term research and reconnaissance expeditions in East Turkestan (Kashgari), Afghanistan and Persia, explored this enigmatic region, met with Chinese officials and businessmen, and established an agent network.
