IV CAPABLANCA IN MEMORIAM. In English (ask us if in doubt)/IV CAPABLANCA IN MEMORIAM. The fourth tournament held in 1965 was marked by unusual circumstances. US champion Bobby Fischer was invited to play and offered a $3 000 speaking fee but the US State Department did not allow him to travel to Cuba because of tensions between Cuba and the US. American grandmaster Larry Evans was allowed to participate in the tournament the year before as he was also a journalist. The US State Department often allowed reporters and journalists to travel to banned countries but did not budge on Fischer even though he agreed to write about the event for Saturday Review.
