Kunstenaar Jef Geys (1934-2018) gaf bijna dertig jaar les in de Rijksmiddelbareschool van het Kempense dorp Balen. Hij deed dat eigenzinnig en bracht re le kunst in de klas en de school. Tegelijk maakte hij de klas en de school tot een hecht bestanddeel van zijn kunst. De dubbelzinnigheid typeerde Geys. Altijd rusteloos aan het werk, met een controversieel imago en dito kunst, levend in zijn dorp. Het wonderlijke samenspel tussen de internationale kunst en Geys? oprechte interesse, zelfs nieuwsgierigheid naar het alledaagse leven. Bart Janssen, Koen Peeters en Jef Van Eynde gingen op zoek naar sporen en getuigen van zijn werk. Zij praatten uitgebreid met ruim 40 mensen in Balen en omstreken. Collega-leraars, leerlingen en vrienden vertelden hun herinneringen, toonden hun unieke souvenirs. Zij spelen de hoofdrol in dit boek, in woord en beeld.
