Het grafische oeuvre van L on Spilliaert (1881-1946) werd lang weinig of niet besproken. Pas in 1982 werd er een eerste tentoonstelling volledig aan gewijd. Spilliaerts prenten, kaft- en boekillustraties zijn misschien minder bekend dan zijn originele werken op papier, maar ze zijn minstens zo mysterieus en aanlokkelijk en zo gevarieerd inzake onderwerp: portretten, figuren, landschappen, stadsgezichten, bossen en parken,. Samen met stadsgenoot James Ensor, wordt Oostendenaar L on Spilliaert vandaag als n van de pioniers van de Belgische moderne kunst beschouwd. Ruim 35 jaar na de eerste tentoonstelling en naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling L on Spilliaert. De collectie van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek van Belgi in de Venetiaanse Gaanderijen in Oostende, van 30 juni tot 30 september 2018, geeft Pandora Publishers, na de uitgave in 1994, de nieuwe en bijgewerkte editie uit van de oeuvrecatalogus van de prenten van L on Spilliaert door Xavier Tricot. De Oorsprong van het Beeld toont hoe het creatief proces van schets en tekening een ondersteunende rol speelde bij het tot stand komen van originele prenten en gravures in Spilliaerts oeuvre. Als jonge tekenaar bleef Spilliaert stilstaan bij gevoelens zoals liefde en dood, eenzaamheid, verlangen en schaamte en wierp hij een bezielde blik op de relaties tussen de man en de vrouw en tussen de mensen onderling. Daarbij illustreerde hij ook in kleine genuanceerde zelfportretten, eenvoudig met potlood en inkt, als zovele snapshots, de evolutie van zijn eigen zelfbeeld. The Origin of the Image shows how the creative process of sketching and drawing played a supporting role in the creation of original prints and engravings in Spilliaert's oeuvre. As a young draftsman, Spilliaert dwelled on feelings such as love and death, loneliness, longing and shame, and he took an inspired look at the relationships between man and woman and between people themselves. In addition, he also illustrated the evolution of his own self-image in small nuanced self-portraits, simply with pencil and ink, like so many snapshots. These critically momentary and often very spontaneous notes subtly represent the deeper intimate dissections of his inner tormented mind. For the first time, exceptional works from private collections are (again) brought together here, which for many will mean a rediscovery of the artist's work. Een einzelganger was hij, enerzijds gebed in de symbolistische traditie van de fin-de-siecle, aan de andere kant lonkend naar de avant-garde. Balancerend op de eeuwwisseling nam Leon Spilliaert (1881-1946) nooit een duidelijke plaats in in het esthetische referentiekader van zijn tijd.Met James Ensor deelde hij naast hun beider thuishaven Oostende, een gelijkgestemde drijfveer gebaseerd op spot en ironie, non-conformisme en de drang om een andere blik op de wereld te werpen. Spilliaert creeerde echter een eigen spirituele beeldtaal, hij experimenteerde met pastel en gouache, speelde met uitgezuiverde kleurvlakken en sierlijke lijnen. De zee onder een koele maan, eenzame figuren met een lege blik, stranden ontdaan van elke menselijke aanwezigheid, lege kamers en gestileerde silhouetten in tegenlicht: Spilliaert wist in abstraherende lijnen en kleuren steeds weer een sfeer van mysterie, magie en vervreemding op te wekken. Door de magisch-realistische toon van zijn werk kan Spilliaert beschouwd worden als een overgangsfiguur tussen symbolisme en surrealisme.Anne Adriaens-Pannier, conservator aan de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van Belgie in Brussel, werkt sinds 1995 op vraag van de familie Leon Spilliaert aan de beredeneerde catalogus van zijn oeuvre en brengt in dit prachtig geillustreerde boek hulde aan de kunstenaar.
