‎MAN RAY and Fashion‎

‎Antwerp, Stockmans, 2023 softcover, 176 pages, 220.x 290 mm Illustrated. English. ISBN 9789464363364.‎

‎Man Ray was a widely versatile artist who worked with a range of different media and did not like to be pigeonholed. Fashion as such did not seem to be a particular interest of his, but dressmaking was part of his youth and photographing fashion played a crucial role throughout his career. The way he portrayed women and their clothing continues to influence fashion photographers today. Man Ray used new and unexpected angles, employed artistic staging, and applied such innovative processes as solarization and multiple exposure to his fashion photography. In recent decades, fashion designers continue to find inspiration in his Surrealist imagery. This is most notably true for Belgian designers, with their avant-garde mindset. Completely in line with the concept of Surrealism, these references are often subconscious. The first reference to Man Ray in Belgian fashion, however, was in fact explicit and can be placed squarely at the entrance of the Brussels-based Norine couture house. ... Fashion not only provided an income and international recognition for Man Ray but also influenced his visual language. That vocabulary had been nurtured from an early age by dressmaking attributes that must un-avoidably carry more meaning for a tailor?s son than for someone else. His images of mannequins and fragmented body parts were consistent with the visual language of the Surrealists, and were, under the influence of his fashion photography, not only uncanny but also aesthetically appealing. His visual art and his commercial photography were not separate from one another, and he was moreover one of the first Surrealist artists to recognize the artistic as well as the commercial potential of mass media. ‎MAN RAY: THE LIBERATED PORTRAIT‎

‎, Thames and Hudson, HB, 240 x 196 mm, 224 p, 165 illustrations, ENG edition. ISBN 9780500028117.‎

‎Published in connection with an exhibition opening at Photo Elys e in spring 2024, this book presents more than 150 of Man Ray's portraits, primarily from the 1920s and 30s. Man Ray (1890-1976) was a man both of and ahead of his time. With his conceptual approach and innovative techniques, he liberated photography from previous constraints and opened the floodgates to new ways of thinking about the medium. A close friend of Marcel Duchamp and Andr Breton, he was one of the few photographers to be mentioned among the Dada artists and Surrealists. He also worked as a fashion photographer, first for Vogue, and later for Harper's Bazaar and Vanity Fair. Renowned as the creator of Ingres' Violin - a photograph from 1924 that broke records when it was sold for $12.4 million in 2022 - Man Ray remains an influential figure in the worlds of art, fashion and pop culture, with many other artists referencing his work. Published in connection with an exhibition at Photo Elys e and in the centenary year of the publication of Andr Breton's Surrealist Manifesto, this book presents more than 150 of Man Ray's portraits, primarily from the 1920s and 30s. It includes portraits of the leading lights of the Paris art scene, among them Marcel Duchamp, Robert Delaunay, Georges Braque, Alberto Giacometti and Pablo Picasso, as well as a selection of his fashion work. As an innovator of photographic techniques and compositional form, Man Ray found the studio portrait - be it of the artists and writers with whom he had longstanding friendships, or of the objects and sculptures he collected - to be the playground in which he could express the visual wit and experimentation for which he is renowned.‎

‎Brancusi, Rosso, Man Ray, Framing Sculpture .NL‎

‎NL-, Boijmans van Beuningen , 2014 Paperback, 230x170mm, 256 pages, Dutch (NL) edition *nieuwstaat! . ISBN 9789069182698.‎
