Reliure en cuir rouge pleine peau de grande beauté, réalisée par Cecil et Larkins, avec toutes les tranches dorées, des dentelles dorées, des titres, etc. La reliure présente quelques légères traces d'usure et de chocs, notamment sur les bords du dos, mais reste globalement en très bon état et propre. Pages de garde marbrées. À l'intérieur, l'ouvrage est complet et en très bon état, propre, avec seulement quelques légères rousseurs sur les premières pages. Le papier est légèrement noirci sur les bords, mais en bon état. Le frontispice est propre, avec quelques rousseurs et une très légère usure sur les bords. Il ne s'agit pas d'une histoire neutre du concile, mais d'un argumentaire selon lequel les protestants n'étaient pas liés par les décisions du concile. La date de cette impression, à peine un an avant la révocation de l'édit de Nantes, correspondait à un moment tendu pour les protestants français, et cette traduction anglaise a dû trouver un public réceptif dans l'Angleterre de la Restauration, où les sentiments anticatholiques et anti-français étaient très vifs, d'autant plus que les réfugiés huguenots commençaient à affluer en nombre croissant à Londres. Pierre (Peter) Jurieu (16371713) était un théologien huguenot français, l'un des polémistes réformés les plus éminents et les plus combatifs de la fin du XVIIe siècle. Contraint à l'exil après la révocation de l'édit de Nantes en 1685, il s'installa à Rotterdam, où il devint une figure de proue de la communauté des réfugiés huguenots et un critique acharné tant de Louis XIV que de l'Église catholique.‎

‎First English edition. This is a translation of Jurieu's "Abrégé de l'histoire du Concile de Trente". Bound in an attractive full red leather mid nineteenth century binding by Cecil and Larkins, with all edges gilt, gilt dentelles and titles etc. There is a little rubbing and bumping to the binding, particularly the spine edges, but overall still in very good clean condition. Marbled end papers. Inside, the work is complete, and in very good, clean condition with just a touch of foxing to the initial pages. The work is slightly darkened to the edges, but sound. The frontis plate is clean, with a touch of foxing and tiny amount of edge wear. This is not a neutral history of the council, but an argument that Protestants were not bound by the decisions of the council. The date of this printing, just a year before the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, was a fraught moment for French Protestants, and this English translation would have found a receptive audience in Restoration England, where anti-Catholic and anti-French sentiment ran high, especially as Huguenot refugees began arriving in London in growing numbers. Pierre (Peter) Jurieu (16371713) was a French Huguenot theologian, one of the most prominent and combative Reformed polemicists of the late 17th century. Forced into exile after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, he settled in Rotterdam, where he became a leading voice of the Huguenot refugee community and a fierce critic of both Louis XIV and the Catholic Church. .‎
