Sir William Jones était un philologue, juriste et orientaliste britannique du XVIIIe siècle (1746-1794). Il a entretenu des liens étroits avec des personnalités éminentes de Grande-Bretagne, d'Amérique et d'Inde pendant la Révolution américaine et les débuts du Raj. Il est considéré comme le fondateur de la linguistique indo-européenne et est surtout connu dans le domaine des études sud-asiatiques comme un pionnier de l'indologie ; il a fondé la Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal en 1784, qui a réuni des expatriés britanniques à Calcutta pour mener des études sur l'Asie et cataloguer d'anciens manuscrits indiens. ‎First edition. Two volume scholarly collection, edited by Garland Cannon, who also wrote the definitive biography "The Life and Mind of Oriental Jones." Sir William Jones was the 18th century British philologist, jurist, and Orientalist (17461794). He was closely involved with significant figures of Great Britain, America, and India during the American Revolution and the early days of the Raj. He is regarded as the founder of Indo-European linguistics, and is best known in South Asian studies as a pioneer of Indology; he founded the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784, which brought together British expatriates in Calcutta to pursue Asian studies and document ancient Indian manuscripts. Hardback set in publisher's unclipped dust jackets. Both dust jacket condition, and internally, the books are in a very good and clean condition.
