Grabado original de la rendición de las fuerzas británicas en América durante la Guerra de la Independencia. «Surprise de S'Eustache» representa el ataque y la toma de la isla de San Eustaquio contra los ingleses en 1781 por parte de las tropas del marqués de Bouille. La leyenda indica que el diseño fue trazado por P.-C. Marillier y ejecutado bajo la dirección de Suntach. Este grabado es prácticamente idéntico al publicado por François Godefroy y Nicolas Ponce, que se registró como «según Marillier» (aunque en este caso la imagen está invertida y el caballo aparece mirando hacia la derecha). No podemos afirmar con certeza si es anterior a la edición de Godefroy y Ponce, pero la ausencia de información sobre otros grabadores sugiere que podría serlo. ‎First edition. An original engraving from the surrender of the British forces in America during the war of Independence. " Surprise de S' Eustache." is depicting the attack and capture of the island of St. Eustatius against the English in 1781 by troops of the Marquis de Bouille. The lettering states that the design was drawn by P.-C. Marillier and executed under the direction of Suntach. This engraving is virtually identical to that published by Francois Godefroy and Nicolas Ponce, which was recorded as "after Marillier." (Although the print in this case is reversed with the horse shown facing the right). We cannot be certain if this was before the Godefroy / Ponce issue, but the lack of any other engraver's information would suggest it may be. The work by Godefroy "Guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis d'Amérique" was the first French book to mention the United States on the title page (Sabin 68421). Visible engraving is 17.5cm x 20.5cm. This is under passe partout and glass in a gilt painted wooden frame measuring 28cm x 32cm. Clément-Pierre Marillier was a French draftsman and engraver specializing in intaglio and etching. He was a close friend of Nicolas Ponce, who frequently engraved his work. Together they supported the French Revolution. Marillier died in 1808. The edges of the wodden frame has a little rubbing, but the engraving is in excellent condition. .‎
