Good, strong clean condition with a little darkening to the spine and slight handling only. Wise (18591937) was a renowned English bibliographer, book collector, and literary scholar, who later became infamous for his large-scale literary forgeries and thefts. Wise was celebrated in his lifetime as an expert on nineteenth-century English poetry, producing authoritative bibliographies of writers such as Tennyson, Swinburne, the Brownings, Shelley, and the Brontës, and he built the famous Ashley Library, now part of the British Library. .‎
