‎"Pencillings by the Way" - Normandy 1864 ‎

‎London NP 1864 Un bel album de croquis architecturaux d'une visite de la Normandie dans les années 1860 par l'éminent architecte Richard Suter. Il est conservé dans une grande reliure (48 cm x 30 cm) en demi-cuir rouge et en bougran vert. Titres dorés au dos et sur le premier plat et décoration dorée. La reliure est en bon état, avec seulement quelques frottements. La reliure a été réalisée par Burnham of Maidenhead. En 1860, Richard Suter* accompagna Benjamin Stacey esq. et ses deux filles lors d'un voyage de quatorze jours en Normandie et à Paris. En tant qu'architecte accompli, il a réalisé des croquis et des dessins tout au long du voyage et les a présentés dans un album à la famille. Il a créé cet album comme une copie exacte du premier pour le garder pour lui. Il y a une note qu'il a collée au début de l'album indiquant les détails du cadeau et précisant que tous les dessins de cet album ont été tracés à la main par lui-même à partir des originaux. Les uvres sont créées sur papier glassine / papier calque épais. L'album comprend Un itinéraire circulaire du voyage et, en dessous, une carte de l'itinéraire emprunté. Il y a ensuite 80 croquis/dessins de taille moyenne ou grande, et 33 autres croquis de petite taille (plutôt des vignettes). En outre, il y a deux aquarelles qu'il a collées. Elles ne se trouvaient probablement pas dans l'album cadeau, comme l'une d'entre elles, un magnifique panorama pliant de Caen, daté de 1849. (Elle mesure 96 cm x 17 cm et montre la ville du côté du rivage). Il y a également sept lithographies d'églises architecturales tirées d'un ouvrage publié, ainsi qu'une photographie stéréoscopique. Les croquis comprennent une poignée de portraits rapides, mais ils représentent surtout des hôtels, des châteaux, l'intérieur et l'extérieur d'églises, des détails d'éléments architecturaux, etc. Une esquisse particulièrement belle représente la Seine à travers la fenêtre du Louvre. ‎A lovely architectural sketch album of a tour of Normandy in the 1860's by the eminent architect Richard Suter. Held in a large (48cm x 30cm) half red leather and green buckram binding. Gilt titles to the spine and front board and gilt decoration. The binding is in good condition, with a little rubbing only. The binding was made by Burnham of Maidenhead. In 1860, Richard Suter* accompanied Benjamin Stacey esq. and his two daughters on a fourteen day tour of Normandy and Paris. As an accomplished architect, he undertook sketches and drawings along the way, and presented these in an album to the family. He created this album as an exact copy of the first to keep for himself. There is a note that he tipped into the front stating the details of the gift and that all the drawings in this album were tracings by hand by himself from the originals. The works are created on glassine / heavy tracing paper. The album comprises: A circular itinerary of the trip, and a map of the route taken below this. There are then 80 medium or large sketches / drawings, and a further 33 sketches which are small (more like vignettes). In addition there are two watercolours that he tipped in. Presumably these weren't in the gifted album, as one, a magnificent folding panorama of Caen, dated 1849. (This is 96cm x 17cm showing the town from the shore side). There are also seven lithographs of architectural churches from a published work, and a stereoscope photograph. The sketches include a handful of quick portraits, but are mostly of hotels, chateaux, the interior and exterior of churches, details of architectural features etc. A particularly nice sketch is of the Seine through the window of the Louvre. An accomplished work, with an architects eye for detail. * Richard Suter (17971883) was a prominent English architect based in London, known for his extensive work as Surveyor to The Fishmongers' Company and for designing several notable buildings in both England and Ireland. His architectural contributions include: Presbyterian Churches: Ballykelly (182527) and Banagher (1825) on the Fishmongers' Company's Estate in County Londonderry. Drawings of these buildings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1827; In Ballykelly, he was responsible for the Model Farm (182324), Lancasterian Schools (182830), Company Agent's House (183032, now a hotel), a range of houses (182324), a lodge in the Presbyterian churchyard (1828), and the Dispensary (1829), all executed in the Classical style; In London, he designed St Peter's Almshouses in Wandsworth (184951) and contributed to the Old School-House at Gresham's School, Holt, Norfolk (1859), both in the Elizabethan style. He also worked as Surveyor to the Trinity House Corporation, and designed houses erected by Thomas Cubitt in 182123 on a site adjoining Trinity House. Richard Suter's legacy is marked by his role in shaping both ecclesiastical and civic architecture in the 19th century, particularly through his association with influential London livery companies and his contributions to educational and charitable buildings. Approximately 65 pages (in a book with 176 numbered pages, hence quite a few blank pages to the rear. Overall in excellent, slightly darkened condition. .‎
