‎Le sujet de cet ouvrage sont les rébellions qui se sont produites au Congo en 1964. Dans ce premier volume, quatre rébellions sont étudiées : celle du Kwilu est la première ; son caractère spécifique ne fait aucun doute si l’on considère ses formes et sa structure. L’opération rebelle sur Bolobo constitue la deuxième partie. Ses formes et ses objectifs paraissent fort semblables à ceux de la rébellion du Kwilu sans que l’on puisse conclure à une unité de décision et de méthode. Par contre, la différence avec les rébellions de l’Est est évidente. La rébellion d’Uvira-Fizi et celle du Nord-Katanga qui se développèrent toutes deux dans des conditions politico-ethniques très particulières forment les troisième et quatrième parties de ce volume. C’est en vue de dégager les traits fondamentaux de l’ensemble du phénomène des rébellions qu’il a paru nécessaire de les isoler et d’en souligner les caractéristiques particulières à chaque région et à chaque ethnie. Ce procédé analytique a également comme avantage de permettre de repérer dans le mouvement final de la rébellion, tel qu’il s’est accompli à Stanleyville, les apports des différentes régions et ethnies.
