First American exhibition on the 18th century Swiss pastellist and miniaturist, who was a contemporary of Quentin de La Tour and Chardin, focussing on his society portraits, some of which were deliberately unflattering. He was greatly influenced by his travels in Turkey and was in much demand by the European courts of the day. The collection of his work from Geneva is the most comprehensive in the world and is supplemented by those from private collections in Switzerland. Introduction by Marcel Roethlisberger.
