‎Cameron was een van de belangrijkste en meest innoverende fotografen van de negentiende eeuw. Haar krachtige portretten zijn wellicht het meest bekend. Maar de modellen die ze voor haar liet poseren - vrienden, familie en bedienden - plaatste ze ook in een Bijbelse, historische en allegorische context. Haar foto's waren om verschillende redenen baanbrekend: Cameron hield ze doelbewust onduidelijk, onscherp zelfs, en ze vertonen krasjes, vlekken en andere sporen van het maakproces. Haar onconventionele aanpak kwam haar op kritiek te staan, maar de schoonheid van haar composities en haar toewijding aan de fotografie als een kunstvorm leverden haar ook bewondering op. Cameron fut l'un des photographes les plus importants et les plus novateurs du XIXe siecle. Ses portraits puissants sont sans doute les plus celebres, mais elle placait egalement les modeles qu'elle faisait poser pour elle - amis, famille et domestiques - dans un contexte biblique, historique et allegorique. Ses photographies etaient revolutionnaires pour differentes raisons : Cameron les gardait deliberement vagues, voire floues, et elles presentent des rayures, taches et autres traces du processus creatif. Son approche non conventionnelle a ete critiquee, mais la beaute de ses compositions et son devouement a la photographie en tant que forme artistique lui ont egalement valu de l'admiration. ‎
