‎Cinquième édition (EO : 1771) de cette grammaire du persan à succès due à William Jones (1746-1784), orientaliste et linguiste. Il est principalement connu pour être le fondateur de la Société asiatique du Bengale en 1784, une des premières associations consacrées à l'étude scientifique des civilisations et langues orientales. De plus, on lui attribue la découverte des similitudes entre le sanscrit, le grec et le latin, bien que celles-ci avaient en réalité été repérées quelques années plus tôt par Gaston-Laurent Curdoux. Ces similitudes mèneront plus tard à la découverte de lindo-européen, protolangue et ancêtre commun de ces langues. Jones introduit le présent ouvrage par un éloge du persan : La langue persane est riche, mélodieuse et élégante ; elle a été parlée pendant de nombreuses années par les plus grands princes dans les cours les plus polies d'Asie ; un certain nombre d'ouvrages admirables ont été écrits dans cette langue par des historiens, des philosophes et des poètes, qui l'ont trouvée capable d'exprimer avec un égal avantage les sentiments les plus beaux et les plus élevés (traduit de langlais). Cette grammaire entièrement rédigée en anglais et en persan est divisée en trois parties. Lauteur offre d'abord un cours de grammaire traditionnel et très complet : explication de lalphabet arabo-persan, des consonnes et voyelles, des noms, des genres, des adjectifs, des verbes etc. Il aborde ensuite la littérature persane en offrant des traductions de nombreux poèmes et fables, avant de donner une liste de lectures conseillées en persan. Enfin, un lexique est fourni en fin douvrage. Cet exemplaire interfolié et richement annoté semble avoir appartenu à deux personnes anonymes. En effet, lexemplaire est truffé d'annotations en anglais et à lencre sur les feuillets intercalés offrant des explications supplémentaires sur des points de grammaire ou des traductions en anglais de poèmes persans. Contemporary long-grained half-maroquin, spine ribbed, decorated and titled, boards covered in contemporary full basane, triple framed in gilt fillet on the boards, roulette on the edges. (Boards rubbed and missing at the corners, first board detached from the binding, jaws cracked, headbands worn). Fifth edition (EO: 1771) of this best-selling Persian grammar by orientalist and linguist William Jones (1746-1784). He is best known as the founder of the Asiatic Society of Bengal in 1784, one of the first associations devoted to the scientific study of Oriental civilizations and languages. He is also credited with discovering the similarities between Sanskrit, Greek and Latin, although these had actually been spotted a few years earlier by Gaston-Laurent Curdoux. These similarities would later lead to the discovery of Indo-European, the protolanguage and common ancestor of these languages. Jones introduces the present work with an eulogy of Persian: The Persian language is rich, melodious and elegant; it has been spoken for many years by the greatest princes in the most polished courts of Asia; a number of admirable works have been written in it by historians, philosophers and poets, who have found it capable of expressing with equal advantage the most beautiful and elevated sentiments. This grammar, written entirely in English and Persian, is divided into three parts. First, the author offers a traditional and comprehensive grammar course: explanation of the Arabo-Persian alphabet, consonants and vowels, nouns, genders, adjectives, verbs and so on. It then moves on to Persian literature, offering translations of numerous poems and fables, before giving a list of recommended Persian readings. Finally, a glossary is included at the end of the book. This richly annotated, interleaved copy appears to have belonged to two anonymous individuals. Indeed, the copy is replete with annotations in English and ink on the interleaved leaves, offering further explanations of grammar points or English translations of Persian poems. In addition, the first few pages of the preface have been translated into French in a different handwriting using pencil.‎

‎The Historical Atlas of the Persian Gulf is a joint initiative of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes in Paris, the University of Tehran, and the Documentation Centre of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran. The aim of this trilingual (French, English and Persian) publication is to trace the evolution of the cartographical representations of the Gulf between 1500 and 1750. About a hundred printed and manuscript maps from libraries and archives all over Europe, the United States and Iran have been gathered, some of them being published for the first time. The maps and charts are presented in five sections dedicated to Portuguese, Dutch, French, English and German cartography. Each item is published with enlarged detail reproductions showing the Gulf, and accompanied by brief commentaries as well as transcriptions of the place names and legends. The authors make numerous suggestions as to how the maps and charts developed in the context of international scientific exchange during the Early Modern age. Hence, the Atlas shows new perspectives on the genealogy of Gulf maps and provides an excellent working tool for future research on the cartography and the history of one of the World?s great strategic areas.
