Bastet, 'Louis Couperus, een biografie', Amsterdam, 1987, p. 306: 'Met Endymion begint in feite Couperus' klassieke periode. Hoewel de oudheid hem al veel langer boeide, is hij er zich pas na zijn veertigste werkelijk intensief mee gaan bezighouden. Was Imperia, letterlijk en figuurlijk, een tamelijk drakerig fragment, afwisselend in proza en poëzie, Endymion is veel luchtiger van karakter. De inhoud van deze Alexandrijnse gedichten heeft niet veel om het lijf. De sfeer is helaas nogal snoeperig, de uitwerking vaak suikerachtig. Het gaat over een in Alexandrië geboren jongetje Endymion, zoon van een pottenbakkersfamilie, dat door zijn ouders aan Eros wordt gewijd. Het spreekt vanzelf dat dit weer de melancholieke Eros is die Couperus zo liefhad. Het ouderpaar verkoopt vervolgens het ene zusje als slavin, waarna het andere niets beters weet te doen dan deerne te worden. Endymion loopt weg. Een anachoreet wil nog proberen een christen van hem te maken, maar de knaap kiest voor het volle leven. Bedenkelijke wederwaardigheden worden zijn deel. Invloeden van de antieke komedie hebben zich hier laten gelden, terwijl Couperus daarnaast zich waarschijnlijk sterk op Petronius' Satyricon heeft geïnspireerd. Het is duidelijk dat hij zich er steeds meer van bewust is geworden hoeveel de antieke literatuur hem te bieden had. Wat hem verder vooral moet hebben aangetrokken, is het gemak waarmee in de oudheid seksuele vrijheden werden behandeld. Voor het eerst doen hetaeren, gespierde worstelaars, dubieuze negers en marktverkopers met onduidelijke (?) bedoelingen hun intrede in Couperus' gedroomd verleden. Het blijft echter nog bij summiere aanduidingen van allerlei ondeugden. Endymion heeft de lichte toets van de antieke Alexandrijnse poëzie, niet zonder bevalligheid maar tevens zonder enige diepgang.
