The volume publishes the painted pottery from the excavations at Karnak North by Jean and Helen Jacquet, and Philippe Brissaud. The material attests three categories: monochrome- and bichrome-painted, and blue-painted pottery, with the majority of the latter type. The forms occurring in each category are presented separately and the motifs employed upon each category are identified and presented in an extensive list. While the pottery derives from disturbed contexts, and the majority was dumped at the site and may have been moved several times, it is an important selection of material. This is especially the case with the blue-painted pottery. The collection enables a comparison of the categories to be made and their interconnections identified. The corpora of bichrome-painted pottery and blue-painted pottery are compared with those from elsewhere in Egypt and their evolution from the mid-18th to mid-20th Dynasties is analysed. The function of each category is reviewed and, in relation to the blue-painted pottery, the marks found upon certain forms are analysed to shed light upon this topic and its place/s of manufacture. Most of the blue-painted pottery is of the period covered by the reigns of Amenhotep III to Tutankhamun; its origin in the temples erected by Akhenaten at Karnak East is considered.

Le Caire, 2026 IFAO 344 p., cartonnage éditeur 24,3 x 32,5

The pottery published in this volume comes from fourteen years of survey and systematic excavations at Anemurium in Cilicia. The study provides the first detailed ceramic history of a Roman site on the south coast of Turkey since the publication of the material from Tarsus in 1950. In incorporating the results of ceramic studies from around the Mediteranean done in the decades following the appearance of the pottery from Tarsus, the work establishes a new starting point for pottery studies in this region of the eastern Mediteranean. The ceramic assemblage from Anemurium contributes much useful evidence for the history of this small provincial city in Asia Minor. From the point of view of ceramic studies in the Roman and early Byzantine periods, Anemurium is located approximately halfway between two important fineware producing areas (the west coast of Asia Minor and the Syrian littoral) and very close to a third (Cyprus). Relative quantities at Anemurium of the ceramics from each area at various periods can provide clues to trade in this particular corner of the Roman Empire. The geographical location of the site also helps to confirm or refute suggestions, based on distribution patterns, about the sources of some well-known pottery types. The status of Anemurium as a relatively minor urban centre within the Empire is in itself of interest when considering what was or was not imported to the site. In addition, the discussion of evidence for local production of an important Roman amphora type makes a significant contribution to ceramic studies. The examination of datable groups from these excavations in conjunction with external evidence from other sites, resulting in the establishment of a cooking-pot series, further enriches our understanding of common-and coarsewares. Ancient pottery production, trade and use are highlighted in this volume devoted to the results of the Canadian excavations at Anemurium. The study illuminates one facet

The ancient city of Neapolis (modern Kavala, Greece) was founded by Thasos in the seventh century BCE at a strategic location where the Thracian hinterlands meet the Aegean Sea. The patron deity of this North Aegean polis was Parthenos (the Maiden), a goddess often associated with Artemis and known to us through epigraphic and archaeological evidence. Her sanctuary came to light in the twentieth century, during rescue excavations, and yielded numerous finds, most of which date from the Archaic period. This edited volume draws together the material evidence from the Sanctuary of Parthenos, with a particular focus on the ceramic wares, stone inscriptions, and small finds from the site. Published as a counterpart to an earlier publication in this series, Amalia Avramidou?s monograph, The Sanctuary of Parthenos at Ancient Neapolis (Kavala): Incised and Painted Ceramic Inscriptions from the Sanctuary and in Aegean Thrace, the essays gathered here nonetheless form a stand-alone volume that sheds light on both the importance of the site as a place of cult, and more broadly the role that it played within the commercial networks and cultural dynamics of the Aegean. Summary Tell Atchana, ancient Alalakh, lies in the Amuq Valley in modern Hatay, southern T rkiye. Long thought to have been abandoned by the end of the Late Bronze Age, recent excavations reveal partial Iron Age occupation, prompting a reassessment of the site's chronology. This book discusses the Iron Age occupation on the site, presenting detailed stratigraphic data and a morphological analysis of the pottery assemblage from the excavated square to establish a relative chronological framework. It also examines the assemblage functionally to identify changes or continuities in habits and actions across the Late Bronze to Iron Age transition and within the Iron Age itself. Through this approach, the study sheds new light on the nature and dynamics of Iron Age I occupation at Tell Atchana.
