‎Exceedingly rare report on the infamous 1906 typhoon in Hong Kong that hit Hong Kong on 18 September 1906. Around 15000 people were killed within just two hours, roughly 5% of Hong Kong's total population at the time, and the typhoon caused property damage exceeding a million pounds sterling – Still to this day one of the worst natural disasters ever to hit Hong Kong “Up to three and a half thousand vessels, including large steamers, vessels of war, sailing ships, water-boats and launches were wrecked, capsized, sunk or lost during the passage of the typhoon (Hong Kong Daily Press (19.9.1906) Hong Kong Government, 1907d Gibbs, 1908). Most of them foundered or were washed ashore on the Kowloon side of Victoria Harbour. According to the official record published on the China Mail (1.10.1906), the number of boats reported lost was 2785. “The Report of the Harbour Master for the Year 1906” (Hong Kong Government, 1907d) reported that “59 merchant vessels of European construction suffered in the waters of the Colony, 5 of 1812 tons foundered, 22 of 22,478 tons stranded, 5 of 1344 tons broken against sea wall, 13 of 21,420 tons badly damaged, and 14 of 25,131 tons slightly damaged. There were in addition 16 lighters of European construction sunk, and badly damaged, 34 launches sunk, 50 damaged and approximately 1796 native craft sunk, and in the majority of cases totally lost.” It further added that “It can be safely said that all craft suffered in the harbour, more or less damaged during the blow.” The later study by Ho (2003) quoted that 2983 fishing boats and 670 ocean-going vessels were casualties during the passage of Typhoon 1906, though these figures are hard to substantiate.” (Mok et al, “A historical re-analysis of the calamitous midget typhoon passing through Hong Kong on 18 September 1906 and its storm surge impact to Hong Kong”)‎
