‎Rare first edition of this satirical portrait of Vienna under the reign of Joseph II with observations on the city's manners, fashions, pleasures, theatres and moral life while commenting positively on the Emperor's Enlightenment reforms. Johann Friedel (1755–1789) was an actor, theatre director, journalist and author whose short and turbulent life was closely connected with the travelling theatre of the eighteenth century. Born in Temesvar in 1755, he joined the theater of Emanuel Schikaneder and travelled with it through a many German and Austrian cities, including Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Salzburg, Linz, Graz and Vienna. He became a close friend of Schikaneder and was probably involved in developing some of the company’s theatrical productions.‎
