‎First seperate edition of this important philosophical essay by Frederick II of Prussia (1712–1786) originally delivered before the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences and Belles-Lettres on 11 January 1770. Here Frederick examines the nature of self-love and its relationship to morality arguing that self-interest, when properly directed, can serve as a foundation for virtuous conduct and the welfare of society.‎
