‎Beautiful Froben-printing of the paraphrases by Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (1466-1536) on the Gospel of Matthaeus and the Gospel of Mark, in Latin. Erasmus' ""Paraphrases in Novum Testamentum"" started with his publication of his commentary on the Gospel of Matthaeus in 1517. The Paraphrases consisted of a series of commentaries on every book of the New Testament but Revelation, a book for which Erasmus had no great regard. The commentaries appeared singly between 1517 and 1524, the earliest ones from Thierry Martens's press at Louvain, others from Michael Hillenius at Antwerp, and the last and most important, those on the Evangelists and Acts, from the Froben house at Basel. Erasmus occasionally revised them until his death in 1536. The work was highly regarded, with translations in English and German soon after publication. Erasmus was ""a pivotal figure in European Humanism, [and] had a significant impact on education and thought in England during the early 16th century. [...] His philosophy, which stressed moral living and practical wisdom, resonated deeply across Europe, influencing notable figures and movements, including the Protestant Reformation. Despite his contributions, Erasmus maintained a complex relationship with both Protestant and Catholic reformers, advocating for reform within the Church rather than a complete separation. "" (Schoeck 2022). Adams: E:733.‎
