First edition of this early travel account from 1863, shortly after the country’s opening to the outside world – being one of the earliest Danish source on Japanese society. The book is based on a Russian travel account by Aleksei Vuisheslavtsev, which Carstensen translated and adapted. It offers a unique insight into Edo (Tokyo) in the 1860s, including descriptions of daily life and shops.
