First edition of Forchhammer’s important work in which he outlines methods to measure organic content in water and examines changes in water supplies feeding Copenhagen’s reservoirs. He collaborated with engineers to assess raw water quality, which later influenced decisions on artesian well drilling to improve Copenhagen’s drinking-water supply. Forchhammer was a geologist, chemist and professor (1794–1865), noted for foundational work in marine chemistry and hydrography.
