Presentation copy from Victor Hugo to his old friend Phillippe Asplet of the first edition of Charles Hugo’s, son of Victor Hugo, work on the ‘Exiles’ - a group of French political refugees in the mid-19th century, mainly during the reign of Napoleon III after his 1851 coup d'état. These were republicans, intellectuals and artists who opposed the authoritarian regime and were either forced into exile or fled to avoid persecution - both Charles and Victor Hugo fled to Jersey and counted themselves among the exiles. The present copy was give to Philippe Asplet (1818-1893) who is named in this very work (pp. 243-244). He was close friend of Victor Hugo while he lived in Jersey. Asplet was a centenier, a senior member of the Honorary Police of Jersey and he famously published poems in the local dialect of Norman French also known as Jèrriais.
