Under the guidance of Linnaeus, Kalm completed his studies at the University of Uppsala. At the initiative of Count Bielke, he undertook botanical expeditions to southern Sweden and Finland. The defining event of his life, however, was his journey to North America and Canada, undertaken to discover useful plants capable of withstanding the Scandinavian climate (DSB VII, p. 210).
