First edition, constituting the second part of Kant’s Metaphysik der Sitten (Metaphysics of Morals), published in the same year as his ”Rechtslehre”. The present work deals with duties of virtue - those moral obligations which cannot be externally enforced but belong to the inner sphere of freedom. Kant systematically examines both duties to oneself (self-preservation, cultivation of talents, self-respect) and duties to others (beneficence, gratitude, sympathy, respect). In doing so, he provides one of the most influential formulations of a deontological ethics grounded in autonomy and reason. Warda 176
