‎Third edition of Shaftesbury’s collection of essays exploring moral philosophy emphasizing natural human affection as the basis for ethical principles as opposed to moral philosophy in a Christian framework. Notable for its new moral approach, the book influenced David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and later philosophers. It was one of the most reprinted books of the 18th century second only to Locke’s Second Treatise. Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st earl of Shaftesbury (1621 - 1683) was an English politician, a member of the Council of State during the Commonwealth, and a member of Charles II’s “Cabinet Council” and lord chancellor (1672–73).‎
