Benedict Carpzov (1595–1666), widely considered to be the founder of German legal science, was a German jurist and legal scholar. He was born in Wittenberg, Germany, into a family of legal scholars. Carpzov served as a professor of law at the University of Wittenberg and later at the University of Leipzig. Carpzov's contributions to legal scholarship earned him recognition as one of the leading jurists of his time.
