Third edition of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia’s, rebuttal of Machiavelli’s “Il Principe”. It was first published in September 1740, a few months after Frederick became king Voltaire oversaw the editing of the treatise. Though Frederick's authorship was commonly understood, it wasn't explicitly mentioned in the publication. However, within just a year of assuming power, Frederick launched an invasion of neighboring Silesia, contradicting the very principles outlined in his work. This marked the beginning of his lengthy reign characterized by conflicts and geopolitical problems, with Prussia retaining its status as both an absolute monarchy and a heavily militarized state. Barbier II, 357-358.
