The Sphinx , built with Fawcett machines in Liverpool, was considered the best French steamship of its time. It was launched at Rochefort August 3, 1829. It is the first steamboat of the French Navy and was built at the Arsenal de Rochefort by the engineer Jean-Baptiste Hubert . Completed in 1833, he towed from Egypt in 1833 the boat Luxor which carried the famous obelisk installed since the center of the Place de la Concorde in Paris.
