Volume 3, with the remaining works of Josephus, is lacking. On the titles are the printer's mark of Sebastianus Gryphius, depicting a griffin, which mythological animal symbolizes courage, diligence, watchfulness, and rapidity of execution, used as a pun of his family name Gryph or Greif. From the claws of this creature hangs a big rectangular stone, symbolizing Constancy, beneath which is a winged globe, symbolizing Fortune. The motto is 'Virtute duce / comite fortuna', 'Virtue thy leader, fortune thy comrade', a quote from a letter of Cicero to Plancus (Epistulae ad Familiares, liber X,3). On the last page of both volumes a woodcut griffin. Latin translation only) (Condition: Old leather binding covered with untanned leather. Binding with traces of wear. One old and small ink annotation in German) (Note: Flavius Josephus, born 37/38 A.D., 'was a Jewish priest of aristocratic descent and a Pharisee. Though a zealous defender of Jewish religion and culture, politically he was pro-Roman and without sympathy for extreme Jewish nationalism'. His first work was a history of the First war of Palestine Jews against the Romans, which raged from 66 till 70 A.D., and of which the author was an eyewitness. The war ended with the fall of Jerusalem, the walls and Temple were destroyed and most of its inhabitants were enslaved. Josephus, who tried to follow the objective methods of Thucydides and Polybius, wrote this history in Aramaic, 'of which a Greek translation, the extant 'Bellum Judaicum' in seven books, appeared between 75 and 79. (...) His next work, the 'Antiquitates Judaicae' in twenty books (published 93/94), is a history of the Jews from the Creation to immediately before the outbreak of the war, giving a fuller account of the period from the Maccabees to A.D. 66 than that in 'Bellum Judaicum' and showing a more hostile attitude to Herod the Great'. (OCD 2nd ed. p. 565) Josephus probably wrote this work, sometimes also called 'Judaica Archaeologia', to defend the sacred history of the Jews, and 'to show that Jewish tradition was as ancient and trustworthy as the Egyptian and Mesopotamian traditions and surely preceded Greek culture. (The Classical Tradition, Cambr. Mass., 2010, p. 497) The 'editio princeps' of the Greek text of the complete works of Josephus was published in Basel in 1544 by Frobenius, and was edited by Arnoldus Arlenius Peraxylus with the help of Sigismund Gelenius. The 'editio princeps' of the ancient Latin translation of 'De antiquitatibus Judaeorum' was published much earlier, in Augsburg in 1470. (See Schreckenberg p. 1) This translation is sometimes ascribed to the Roman statesman and author Cassiodorus, born ca. 485, died after 580, who served in the administration of Theoderic the Great, king of the Ostrogoths. He however didnot translate it, but he commissioned the translation. He mentions this explicitily in his Institutiones 1:17,1: 'Ut est Iosephus (...). Hunc tamen ab amicis nostris, quoniam est subtilis nimis et multiplex, magno labore in libris viginti duobus converti fecimus in Latinum'. Le second volume était déjà prêt avant la révolution mais le manuscrit ne fut retrouvé qu'après, certains exemplaires portant la date 1840 et d'autres 1842. Cette édition se fonde à la fois sur les éditions anciennes et sur les manuscrits conservées en France, au Vatican, en Angleterre et en Allemagne. Le premier volume fut réédité au XIXe et le tome II se vendait seul pour compléter le premier comme pour notre exemplaire. Bel exemplaire sur beau papier et à grandes marges de cet ouvrage donnant le texte grec et la traduction latine. Le premier volume fut préparé sous la direction de Charles Clémencet (1703-1778) et le second fut achevé par Armand-Benjamin Caillau (1794-1850). Provenances : Séminaire de Bayeux avec son ex-libris XIXe (« Ex Bibliotheca Seminarii Bajocensis ») et Grand Séminaire de Caen (cachet sur le titre). Pleine basane de l'époque du second volume, dos à nerfs orné, pièces de titre et tomaison maroquin. Dos éclaircis, épidermures en bordure des plats, feuillets parfois sur les témoins, déchirure sans manque au dernier feuillet du tome I (avant la reliure ?), quelques rares rousseurs. Rare ouvrage. ‎

Paper slightly yellowing) (Note: The Latin historian Sulpicius (or Sulpitius) Severus was born in Aquitania ca. 360 A.D. He organized under the influence of Bishop Martinus of Tours a sort of monastic life on his own estate for himself and his friends. His extant works are a vita S. Martini Turonensis, 'which is an apology for ascetism'; and this Sacrae Historiae, a kind of universal chronicle to A.D. 402, 'which is an important source for the history of 4th-century events, (...). The whole book is an interesting attempt to present a 'breviarium' of history from the Christian point of view: it uses Christian chronographers, especially St. Jerome, but also Pagan writers. J. Bernays suggested that for the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D 70 Sulpicius followed the lost account of Tacitus. Sallust and Tacitus are his models in the matter of style'. (OCD, 2nd 3d. p. 983) After the text of the Sacrae Historiae follows the Continuation written by the humanist Johannes Sleidanus, 1507-1556, taken from his De quattuor summis imperiis. This treatise of 90 pages deals with the history of the chruch in the Middle Ages until Charles V. After the Continuatio follow three letters on Saint Martin's miracles and death, and three dialogues of Sulpicius Severus which compare Saint Martin's feats and virtues with those of the Egyptian hermits. This Sulpicius edition is a line by line reissue of the Elzevier edition of 1643. Texts of Sulpicius were apparantly in demand, for the Elzeviers of Leiden and Amsterdam produced three editions of the Sacrae Historiae (1626, 1635 & 1643) and four editions of Sulpicius' Opera (1635, 1643, 1656 & 1665) (Provenance: Armorial bookplate on the front pastedown. Underneath this bookplate a label: 'Ex libris Gulielmi Gaskell Rouse A.M., Ex Aede Christi; Oxon., Anno 1861'. 'William Gaskell Rouse was born c. 1827 in Old Windsor, Berkshire. He appears in the 1871 Census, aged 44, a Church of England Clergyman, living with his wife, Gertrude, aged 34, in Offley, Hertfordshire with three servants. Gertrude was born in St Kitts, West Indies, and her maiden name was Gertrude Maria Grace Payne daughter of Charles Gillies Payne and Mary Elizabeth Salusbury. William died in 1871'. Rouse studied in Eton and Christ Church Oxford. (See the site gaskellfamily((com)) ) The armorial bookplate bears the motto: 'Omne bonum Dei donum', 'Every good is the gift of God'.
