In this seminal paper in neurophysilogy Horsley and Schäfer definitely showed that total removal of the occipital lobe produced permanently blind animals, but only if the lesion extended on the ventral surface into the temporal lobe. This was impotent as the observations conclusively established a relation between areas (localization) in the brain and their specific functions. Garrison & Morton 1419.
