‎Première édition anglaise, l'originale a paru en latin en 1730, traduite en anglais par Francis Holliday. Cet ouvrage est le plus célèbre de Stirling, il est précédé d'une intéressante introduction dans laquelle il cite les principaux scientifiques qui ont influencé ses recherches : James Gregory, Isaac Newton (dont Stirling fut le protégé) et Abraham de Moivre avec lequel Stirling était en correspondance à l'époque de la rédaction de cet ouvrage. L'auteur y étudie la question de la croissance de la factorielle et la convergence des séries, notamment infinies. Stirling y présente la formule et les nombres qui portent son nom et s'intéresse également à la fonction gamma d'Euler. Cet exemplaire est unique car il a appartenu à Carl Ferdinand Degen (ex-libris manuscrit au titre), mathématicien Danois, qui a annoté l'ouvrage dans ses marges et la première garde de ses commentaires et calculs.
