Rare première et unique édition espagnole de la fameuse description de la Chine de Martini. Cordier, Sinica, 626; Sommervogel, 648; Lust 445; Palau 156356 ; Streit-Dindinger V, 2321. This Spanish translation was prepared by Estevan de Aguilar y Zuñiga. Martinio's work was first published in Latin in 1654 and was "considered at the time to be the best general description of China before Du Halde... [It] includes an account of the Manchu conquest of China" (Lust [440]). Martini (1614-1661) was a remarkable Italian Jesuit, cartographer and traveler; he is known for his history of China and his cartographic renderings of the country; the latter so important, that eventually were published as one of the volumes of Blaeu’s monumental ‘Atlas Nuevo de la extrema Asia, o descripcion geographica del Imperio de las Chinas’, published in 1658. Martini sailed to China in 1640, making port in Macau in 1642, where he stayed for over 10 years studying the cartography, language and history of China, and becoming the superior of the mission at Hang-Tcheou; after that he parted back to Europe to work on his atlas. After a few years he made his way back to China until his death. His fame and the respect gained were partially due to his use of the Chinese cartography available at the time, thus not only relying on European maps but on local maps as well. Death would find him in China in 1661. Even today, in China, he is arguably the most regarded missionary to have ever stepped foot in that country, and has been called "the first to study the history and geography of China with rigorous scientific objectivity; the extend of his knowledge of the Chinese culture, the accuracy of his investigations, the depth of his understanding of things Chinese are examples for the modern sinologists" (Prof. Ma Yong, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences). Précieux exemplaire de ce rare ouvrage sur la Chine conservé dans sa reliure de l’époque non restaurée.

Édition originale du récit de la conquête de la Chine par les Mandchous donnée par l’évêque espagnol Palafox y Mendoza.

Édition originale de ce récit de la conquête de la Chine par les Mandchous donné par Palafox y Mendoza. Chadenat, I, 1946; R. J. Howgego, Encyclopedia of explorations, to 1800, P9. « Ouvrage peu commun, orné d’une planche gravée sur cuivre. » (Chadenat). Le récit s’ouvre en 1640 sur les rebellions civiles chinoises. Ces dernières déclenchèrent de très grands affrontements, notamment à Pékin, et conduisirent à la mort du dernier empereur Ming, Chongzen, puis à l’invasion progressive mandchoue de la Chine. L’ouvrage aborde l’art de la guerre, les mœurs et coutumes des Chinois, leurs religions, … On y trouve également un intéressant chapitre (XXIV) traitant des relations entre le Japon et la Chine où l’auteur souligne que, malgré leur grande force, les Japonais craignent avec raison les Tartares. Le présent ouvrage fut publié après la mort de l’auteur à partir d’un manuscrit trouvé dans ses papiers. Pendant son séjour de 9 ans au Mexique, il avait entretenu une correspondance avec la Chine d’où il recevait des nouvelles deux fois par an par le biais des vaisseaux en provenance de Macao ou de Manille. Son ouvrage fut traduit en français et en anglais dès 1671 et comptera de nombreuses réimpressions au cours du XVIIe siècle. «Que historia tan rara y tan extraordinaria bien merece estar impresa en todas lenguas, para que el mundo entero esté informado de un sucesso, y una revoluçion tal que no ay exemplo de tan grande en el mundo.» (Avertissement). “Spanish bishop and historian (1600-59). Born in Fítero to a noble Spanish family, he received his education at Huesca and the universities of Alcalá and Salamanca. In 1627 he was appointed as Fiscal del Consejo de Guerra, but his first ecclesiastical position was a treasurer of the Santa Iglesia de Tarazona. Ordained a priest at Salamanca in 1629, he was in 1639 consecrated bishop of Puebla de los Angeles and appointed visitor-general to Mexico. During his term in Mexico, 1640-49, Palafox was in charge of the dispatch of vessels to the Philippines, placing him in an ideal position to collect letters and memorials sent from China to Mexico by way of Macao and Manila. When he returned to Spain in 1649, Palafox started to collate these materials into a ‘Historia de la conquista de la China por el Tartaro’. This was published in Paris in 1670 and is widely regarded as a companion volume to that of Martino Martini. His work is based entirely on letters he received and in no way borrows from Martini, whom he possibly had never read. Palafox was promoted to the bishopric of Osma in 1659 but died the same year.” (Encyclopedia of explorations, to 1800). L’édition est ornée d’un superbe frontispice gravé sur cuivre sur lequel figure une carte de la Chine et des pays frontaliers (le Japon, Macao, la Corée...), ainsi qu’une scène montrant trois cavaliers armés et conquérants et un homme agenouillé devant eux, sans doute le dernier empereur Ming, Chongzhen, s’avouant vaincu et tendant sa couronne aux guerriers. Précieux volume conservé dans sa première reliure en vélin de l’époque.

In-f° (360 x 265 mm), [27] ff. - 22 pl., maroquin rouge à long grain, dos à 5 faux-nerfs orné, décor d'un triple filet, de deux frises à froid et d'un encadrement « à la grecque » sur les plats, roulette sur les coupes au niveau des coins, roulette intérieure, tranches dorées (reliure de l'époque) L'ouvrage, imprimé sur beau papier vélin fort, bilingue anglais-français, décrit 22 supplices (bastonnade, torsion des oreilles, torture des doigts, brûlure des yeux, amputation, décapitation...) illustrés chacun d'une planche rehaussée à l'aquarelle et gravée en pointillé par John Dadley, d'après des originaux réalisés par l'artiste (ou studio) cantonais Pu-Qua. L'auteur, William Henry Mason, major des Royal Madras Fusiliers, aurait acquis ces peintures vers 1790 lors d'une escale à Canton. La Chine était alors hostile aux étrangers, et plus particulièrement aux britanniques, qui ne pouvaient circuler librement dans le pays. Mason parvint cependant, par l'intermédiaire de marchands cantonais, à obtenir les peintures et informations qui serviront de base à deux livres de planches : The Costumes of China (William Miller 1800) et le présent ouvrage. Bien que certains des supplices évoqués dans l'ouvrage soient explicitement décrits comme abolis (« supplice de couper le jarret à un malfaiteur ») ou archaïques, et que d'autres paraissent relever plus de la rumeur que de la réalité (« manière de brûler les yeux avec la chaux »), Les punitions des chinois contribua à soulever, dans les pays occidentaux, des inquiétudes quant à la sévérité perçue du système judiciaire chinois, et nourrit la sympathie du public pour la mission « civilisatrice » de l'Empire. Mors, coiffes et coins frottés, traces sombres sur le plat inférieur, léger transfert des gravures sur la page en regard, rares rousseurs.
