‎The Military Panorama; or, Officer's Companion became, from volume 2 onward, The Royal Military Panorama (title adopted "by permission" from September 1813 — the first British military periodical to receive royal patronage). A British military periodical edited anonymously by John Philippart (1784?-1874), a clerk at the War Office from 1811 to 1833, which gave him privileged access to official dispatches and reports. His name never appeared in the publication, but his role as editor was an open secret, confirmed in the introduction to his next work, the Royal Military Calendar (1815). According to Philippart himself (letter to the Duke of Wellington, 1834), the Panorama also served as an unofficial channel of communication for the government. The publication combines operational accounts, dispatches and campaign summaries (Spain, Russia 1812, Germany 1813, France 1814), with a particularly rich documentary apparatus: maps of the theatres of operations, battle plans, officer lists and biographical notices, offering information on regiments across Europe and in the colonies of the British Army. Volumes III and IV notably contain the full proceedings of the court-martial of Colonel Mark Beaufoy (1813), a case that caused a great stir in the military and general press of the time.
