The History of India est son œuvre majeure. Publiée en 1841 en deux volumes, elle retrace l'histoire du sous-continent indien depuis les origines de la civilisation hindoue jusqu'à l'établissement de la domination musulmane et à l'avènement de l'Empire moghol. S'appuyant sur de nombreuses sources persanes, arabes et indiennes, Elphinstone propose une vaste synthèse historique qui fit longtemps autorité dans le monde anglophone. L'ouvrage est également remarquable pour ses développements consacrés à la société, aux religions, aux institutions et à la géographie de l'Inde. Montstuart Elphinstone (1779-1859) fut un administrateur et historien britannique de premier plan dans l'Inde coloniale. Gouverneur de Bombay de 1819 à 1827, il est considéré comme l'un des meilleurs connaisseurs occidentaux de l'histoire et des institutions indiennes de son époque.
