‎Première édition du récit de voyage de William Hodges, peintre paysagiste britannique qui participa comme artiste à la seconde expédition de James Cook (1772-1775) avant d’être invité en Inde par Warren Hastings, gouverneur général du Bengale. L’ouvrage décrit ses itinéraires, ses observations architecturales et géographiques ainsi que ses vues prises sur le vif entre le Bengale, le Bihar et les régions du Gange. Hodges est l’un des premiers paysagistes britanniques à avoir visité l’Inde, et son récit contribue à la visualisation européenne de l’ancien « Orient » à la fin du XVIII siècle. 14 engraved plates and one folding map. First edition of the travel narrative by William Hodges, the British landscape painter who served as artist on James Cook’s second voyage (1772–1775) before being invited to India by Warren Hastings, Governor-General of Bengal. The work records his itineraries, architectural and geographical observations, and on-the-spot views taken across Bengal, Bihar, and the regions along the Ganges.
