Garrison Morton 5660 signale, à la rubrique consacrée à Horace Wells (1815-1848), dentiste de Hartford, pionnier de l'anesthésie, que son élève "Morton got the idea of using ether instead of nitrous oxide from Charles T. Jackson (1805-1880). Jackson suffured from mental illness and later tried to claim that he had discovered surgical anaesthesia, as well as guncotton, and that he had described to Samuel F.B. Morse the essential features of the telegraph. Wells, who was not in very good mental health himself, eventually committed suicide by opening a vein in his arm and at the same time inhaling ether vapour."Édition originale de la traduction française due à M.H.C. d'Aquin.Rare
