‎THE COLLECTION AS A CHARACTER. portray the character of the M HKA collection.‎

‎Antwerp, Mukha, 2014 hardcover, 290pp in-folio, 43 x 30 cm in DUTCH + ENGLISH. Fine copy. Including an index. Illustrated. ISBN 9789072828477.‎

‎The Collection as a Character will reflect the current priorities of the M-HKA collection: to evaluate the avant-garde tradition of Antwerp, to explore the new multi-polar world order, to discuss the nature of images today, to articulate the importance of the performative and the socialy-engaged in contemporary art. The Collection as a Character is an attempt to review our collection after 25 years of creative contingency: visions articulated by forceful personalities, opportunities presenting themselves, limitations inspiring novel solutions. In other words, it tries to portray the character of the M HKA collection as it has been shaped by the reality of institutional art collecting in our times. The ensemble is key to characterising our collection. It is a coherent group of works that is significant enough, in either qualitative or quantitative terms, to be regarded as more than a presence of works or series of works by this or that artist. M-HKA Ensembles is also the name of our online digital database (ensembles.org). This exhibition and the accompanying book will present some 20 ensembles that help us to understand the M-HKA collection. Among these are ensembles of works by prominent Flemish artists such as Vaast Colson, Luc Deleu, Jan Fabre, Toon Tersas, Luc Tuymans and Panamarenko (who is a special case because of his donation to M-HKA of his former house and studio at Biekorfstraat in Antwerp). M-HKA has important ensembles by artists from other parts of the world, for instance James Lee Byars, Jimmie Durham, C.K. Rajan and a number of artists from the former Soviet Union, India, China and North Africa. There are also ensembles of a different kind, such as the Vrielynck Collection of objects from the prehistory of cinema or the 1970s archive of the International Culture Centre in Antwerp..‎

‎Early Prints, The Print Collection of the Royal Library of Belgium, ‎

‎, Brepols, 2002 184 p., 550 b/w ill. 16 colour ill., ills., 225 x 305 mm, Languages: English,Hardback.fine condition ! ISBN 9781872501291.‎

‎The Print Room of the Royal Library of Belgium currently possesses roughly 700,000 independent prints, including a few hundred early' woodcuts and engravings from the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, which make up one of the most important parts of the collection. In the course of time, only a small portion of these has been recorded in a systematic catalogue. One-and-a-half centuries ago, in 1857, the head curator Louis Alvin catalogued the Library's noteworthy collection of Italian niello prints. Thirty-five years later, in 1892, Max Lehrs, then head of the Dresden Print Room, published the first and only inventory of the collection of fifteenth-century northern engravings in the Royal Library's Print Room. As for the two other parts of the collection included in this book, namely the early woodcuts and the early Italian prints, this is the very first time that each has been examined as a group. Consequently, the exceptionally rich collection of 'early' prints in the Royal Library of Belgium has remained essentially unknown to many thus far. This catalogue is a first step in making the collection better known.‎

‎Dukes of Arenberg and Music in the Eighteenth Century : The Story of a Music Collection‎

‎, Brepols 2015, 2015 Hardcover, iv + 267 pages, ., 184 col. ills, 220 x 280 mm, English, ISBN 9782503555577.‎

‎This publication is the revised, expanded, and updated version of the book in French that appeared in 2010 from the same publisher: Les ducs d?Arenberg et la musique au XVIIIe si cle. Histoire d?une collection musicale. The study explores in depth the development of a music collection created by one of the most influential noble European families under the Ancien R gime ? a family resident in the Spanish and then the Austrian Netherlands, the territory of the future state of Belgium. Today forming an integral part of the private family archives kept at Enghien (in the Hainaut region of Belgium), this exceptional collection of manuscripts and prints from all over Europe began to expand in the last years of the seventeenth century, and grew gradually and continually throughout the eighteenth century. Analysing this collection has afforded a rare opportunity to discover and identify musical sources entirely unknown to us until now; these include works by the Italians Alessandro Scarlatti, Pietro Torri, and Antonio Vivaldi. With the aid of unpublished archival material, it has proved possible also to relate and explain how this important music collection was amassed, and, through the prism of the musical affinities of an aristocratic family, to illustrate the evolution of taste in eighteenth-century Europe. The introduction to the book sets out key milestones in the history of the Arenbergs and their music library. The three chapters that follow trace the development of this collection under Dukes L opold-Philippe (1690-1754), Charles-Marie-Raymond (1721-1778), and Louis-Engelbert (1750-1820) d?Arenberg, while an Epilogue sheds light on the era of the Prince and composer Paul d?Arenberg (1788-1844). Via music lessons, private and public concerts, operatic performances (not only in Brussels but also in Paris, London, Vienna, and Rome), and contacts with such musicians as Mozart, Paisiello, and Haydn, the Dukes acquired in the region of 1500 music manuscripts and prints, where the above names, as well as those of Lully, Handel, Pergolesi, Gr try, and Salieri, appear alongside those of musical personalities long since fallen into obscurity. Finally, the book tells a hitherto largely untold story of musical life in the former Southern Netherlands and Europe under the Ancien R gime, the family archives shedding particular light on the role played in this by the Dukes of Arenberg as patrons of the Arts. Towards this end, the book makes detailed reference to and reproduces the most significant sources and documents. Review ?The book is beautifully produced and consists of everything a critical reader wishes to find: a fine structure, excellent prose, many full colour reproductions of highest quality, and, above all, a lot of information (?) All in all, this is a lovely book which will easily serve as an adornment on the bookshelves of readers with an interest in western music of the eighteenth century.? (Albert Clement in BMGN, 20/11/2017)‎

‎Icons of Modern Art: The Morozov Collection‎

‎, Gallimard/Fondation Louis Vuitton, 2021 Hardcover, 520 pages, ENG, 305 x 285 x 50 mm, dustjacket, NEW, 545 coloured images, ISBN 9782072904592.‎

‎The Morozov brothers, wealthy Moscow textile merchants Mikhail (1870-1903) and Ivan (1871-1921), played a key role in bringing Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art to Russia in the first decades of the 20th century. Along with Sergei Shchukin, a fellow industrialist and art collector, they created an international audience for French art and had a transformative effect on Russian cultural life. Between the years 1903 and 1914, Ivan Morozov spent more money than any other collector of his time, amassing a stunning collection of works by Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Bonnard, Sisley, Renoir, Signac, Vuillard, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Degas, Pissarro, and, most especially, Cezanne (17 paintings, all of which will be on display). On his bi-annual trips to Paris, he bought from the most discerning dealers, including Paul Durand-Ruel, Ambroise Vollard, and Daniel-Henri Kahnweiler, as well as directly from the artists themselves. His collection comprises 278 paintings, not including 300 paintings by Russian artists (Chagall, Malevich, Serov, Vrubel, Levitan, Larionov, Goncharova) and 28 sculptures. The Morozov collection was nationalised after the October 1917 Revolution, and after World War II it was divided among the Hermitage Museum, the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, and the Tretyakov State Museum. This stunning catalogue has been published for a show of 100 highlights from the Morozov Collection that will run from February 24th to July 25th 2021 at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris. It is the first time that works from the collection will travel abroad since they were acquired. This landmark exhibition will be the only stop for the show outside of Russia.‎
